Master of Public Health/MS in Management and Organizational Behavior Dual Degree Courses

The dual MPH/MSMOB degree offers students the opportunity to combine advanced studies in management and public health. The program requires the successful completion of 96 credit hours—38 toward the MPH, 30 toward the MSMOB and 28 credit hours of electives.

MPH Courses

MPH 602 Health Systems (4 credits)
This course provides an overview of the history, basic structures and operations of public health and health care delivery systems.

MPH 511 Introduction of Statistics Analysis (4 credits)
Students will learn basic statistical concepts including frequency distributions, central tendency and variability via parametric and non-parametric methods, as well as related Excel applications.

MPH 601 Behavioral and Social Aspects of Public Health (4 credits)
Students will explore social and psychological determinants and theories of health behavior.

MPH 610 Health Policy (4 credits)
This course considers current health policies as they relate to larger political and social debates, the determinants of disease, and available resources and information-gathering systems necessary to formulate health policies.

MPH 604 Epidemiology (4 credits)
Students will learn to analyze chronic and communicable disease patterns in the U.S. and the world. The course covers the epidemiological triad and other models, preventive health and medicine, the impact and spread of disease throughout history and the study of epidemiological statistical methods.

MPH 605 Environmental Health (4 credits)
The health implications of human relationships to the biosphere are examined as well as the effect of environmental change on physical, biological and social patterns. Alternative solutions for environmental problems are explored.

MPH 607 Community Health Analysis (4 credits)
Students will learn to analyze the factors relating to health needs in communities, leading to proposals for solutions. Coursework involves research and field work.

MPH 690 Internship/Capstone in Public Health (6 credits)
During the internship, students will demonstrate skills and competencies learned in the MPH program in a practical, supervised experience in a health-related agency. The purpose of the internship is to provide experiential learning and the opportunity to explore professional goals.

MSMOB Courses

MGMT 530 Organizational Behavior (4 credits)
This course covers the basic theory and application of administration and management. Organizational behavior, including problems of motivation, leadership and organization design, is explored.

MBA 500 Financial Accounting (4 credits)
Students will study the preparation, interpretation and analysis of the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows. The course emphasizes the rationale for and implications of important accounting concepts, the selection of alternatively acceptable accounting methods and the varying affects of valuation and net income determination. Students will gain an understanding of complex accounting data that is required at upper management levels.

MGMT 521 Career and Human Resource Planning (2 credits)
The course covers current theory and research in career and manpower planning, including techniques, Affirmative Action and career planning, career change, age-30 crisis, mid-career crisis, dual-career couples and retirement.

MGMT 634 Strategy, Structure, Decision Making (4 credits)
Students will focus on the role of management in the development of organizational strategy, the decision-making process and the development of appropriate organizational structure and control systems. Case analyses will be used as a method for understanding and applying macro-behavioral and management science concepts to the resolution of managerial and organizational problems.

MBA 683 Project Management (4 credits)
This course applies the art and science of project management as applied to a variety of settings and discusses how to initiate, plan, execute and control and close projects within budget and on schedule. Advanced topics may include critical chains, adaptive and agile project management and portfolio management. A project planning software tool is utilized, usually MS Project.

MGMT 522 Ethics and Social Responsibility in Management (2 credits)
The course examines major ethical theories and considers the need for social responsibility in business and other organizations. Students will study the ethical dilemmas faced by managers in such areas as marketing, product safety, the environment, job discrimination and dealing with people in an organization.

MGMT 612 Methods of Organizational Research (4 credits)
This course covers methods of research design for organizational studies. Topics include academic and practitioner research issues, logic skills, qualitative and quantitative research design, data collection, analysis and report writing.

MGMT 671 Strategic Management (4 credits)
In this course, students will master strategy formulation and implementation concepts using cases and readings.

MPH 603 Ethical and Political Issues in Public Health (4 credits)
This course focuses on the ethical and political dimensions of public health and health care organizations and professions.

MPH 664 Marketing of Health Services (4 credits) 
This course examines actions that successful health leaders take in the planning, strategy, research and implementation of marketing plans. Students explore concepts of marketing theory and the execution of marketing tactics as they apply to the health industry.

MPH 671 Finance in Public Health and Healthcare Delivery Systems (4 credits)
Students will study the development of managed care, types of organizations and plans, financial models, risk management and trends; and health care financing through public and private grants.

MPH 686 Government Regulations in the Health Industry (4 credits)
Students will learn about regulations and systems designed to protect personal health information, licensing of health care facilities and rules regarding the quality of health care.

MGMT 558 Service Management (2 credits)
Students gain an understanding of the management and delivery of effective service. Coursework covers service strategy, development of service systems, human resource strategy and implementation of the service management concept.

MGMT 581 Team Building (2 credits)
The focus of this course is on the theoretical basis of team building and its strengths and weaknesses as an organization development intervention.

MGMT 582 Conflict Management (2 credits)
Students gain an understanding of interpersonal and intra-group conflict and conflict management. The course examines underlying causes, participant strategies and outcomes, and effective management strategies.

MGMT 532 Organizational Development (4 credits)
Students gain mastery in the theory and practice of organizational change and organization development (O.D.), including skills for analysis, planning, implementation and evaluation of change programs. Topics include the learning process, O.D. interventions, consultant skills, employee participation, monitoring success, reinforcement and ethical issues.

MGMT 530 Organizational Behavior (4 credits)
Students learn appropriate theory and application of administration and management. The course emphasizes organizational behavior, including motivation, leadership and organization design.

MGMT 583 Organizational Assessment (2 credits)
This course emphasizes understanding theories, models, tools and best practices for assessing organizational performance. Students learn to use assessment as a diagnostic intervention. Practical applications provide frameworks for analyzing and applying the course material.

MGMT 557 Organizational Culture (2 credits)
Students gain an understanding and analysis of corporate culture and its relationship to behavior and organizational performance. Coursework includes learning management techniques to use culture more effectively. Students will explore the concept of culture as it applies to international values and norms in management.

MGMT 552 Leadership (2 credits)
This course examines alternative models of leadership and their effects on employee and organizational performance. Key topics include leadership skills and strategies for effective performance.
