Online MBA/MPH Dual Degree Courses

The online dual MBA/MPH degree program offers motivated students the opportunity to combine advanced business studies with coursework in public health, preparing them for high-level administrative and managerial positions in the public health field.

The program consists of 96 credit hours, made up of 20 credit hours of prerequisites, 30 hours of MBA courses, and 46 hours of MPH courses.

Prerequisites

MBA 520 Leadership and Ethics in a Global Environment (4 credit hours)
Students will review paradigms of leadership in a global environment and principles for ethical decision-making in business situations. Students will be assessed on leadership capacities and responsibilities in challenging situations.

MBA 541 Analytical Tools for Management Decisions (4 credit hours)
The goal for this course is to prepare students to use quantitative information effectively and avoid the potential pitfalls of misusing statistical methods. The emphasis is on understanding what a previously obtained data set implies and, if appropriate, developing meaningful forecasts with a reasonable sense of confidence. Specific topics include data analysis and statistical description, sampling and statistical inference, time series and regression analysis.

MBA 510 Economics (4 credit hours)
Students will study fundamental concepts of macroeconomics, including supply and demand, measurements and determination of economic performance such as GDP, inflation and unemployment. Other topics include the causes of economic instability, corrective measures and the Federal Reserve System.

MBA 500 Financial Accounting (4 credit hours)
This course concentrates on the preparation, interpretation and analysis of the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows. It emphasizes the rationale for and implications of important accounting concepts, the selection of alternatively acceptable accounting methods and the effects of valuation and net income determination on reporting. Students learn to understand the complex accounting data they will receive as operational managers.

MBA 539 International Business (4 credit hours)
Students will examine selected readings in international business on topics including culture, geography, politics, foreign direct investment, supply chain management, monetary systems, foreign exchange markets and political risk management, as well as current topics in international business.

MBA Courses

MGMT 581 Team Building (2 credit hours)
You will develop a working knowledge of team-building, its theoretical basis, and its strengths and weaknesses as an organization development strategy.

MBA 601 Managerial Accounting (4 credit hours)
This course introduces the measurement, communication and interpretation of cost data for management decision-making, planning, control and evaluation of results. Students are shown how to use accounting information as a tool for coordinating managerial activities and will use case studies to understand the application of concepts.

MBA 611 Managerial Economics (4 credit hours)
Students will learn to apply microeconomic tools such as optimization, consumer behavior, elasticity of demand, marginal analysis and market structure to business decision-making.

MBA 651 Financial Management (4 credit hours)
Students will develop an understanding of financial theory and its application through case analysis. Topics include capital management, operating and financial leverage, and costs of capital, investment and financing decisions. Techniques for the valuation of investment alternatives using net present value and internal rate of return concepts are covered, including the identification of cash flows relevant for capital budgeting. Emphasis is placed on the application of these concepts to the valuation of a going concern.

MBA 661 Marketing Management (4 credit hours)
This course introduces students to the theory and practice of marketing, including consumer and organizational behavior, market research, product development, sustainability, market segmentation, promotions and other factors that contribute to a successful marketing program.

MBA 630 Operations Management (4 credit hours)
This course focuses on the strategic role of operations, developing an appreciation for operations activities, and how to improve them. Issues include continuous quality improvement, the critical importance of the customer and consideration of selected quantitative techniques.

MBA 683 Project Management (4 credit hours)
Students will study the art and science of project management as applied to a variety of business and technology settings. The course discusses how to initiate, plan, execute and control, and close projects within budget and on schedule. Advanced topics may include critical chains, adaptive and agile project management, the project office and portfolio management. A project planning software tool is utilized, usually MS Project. This course is appropriate for technology and non-technology managers.

MBA 671 Strategic Management (4 credit hours)
This course requires students to use and integrate the disciplines and techniques learned in previous required courses. Strategy formulation and implementation concepts are discussed.

MPH Courses

MPH 602 Health Systems (4 credit hours)
This course provides an overview of the history, basic structures and operations of public health and health care delivery systems.

MPH 601 Behavioral and Social Aspects of Public Health (4 credit hours)
Examines social and psychological determinants and theories of health behavior.

MPH 610 Health Policy (4 credit hours)
This course considers current health policies as outcomes of larger political and social debates, as well as the determinants of disease and the resources and information gathering systems necessary to formulate health policies.

MPH 604 Epidemiology (4 credit hours)
This course analyzes chronic and communicable disease patterns in the U.S. and the world. It covers the epidemiological triad and other models, preventive health and medicine, a historical view of disease and the study of epidemiological statistical methods.

MPH 605 Environmental Health (4 credit hours)
The health implications of human relationships to the biosphere are examined, as well as the effect of environmental change upon physical, biological and social patterns. Alternative solutions for environmental problems are explored.

MPH 606 Methods of Research in Public Health (4 credit hours)
This course is an overview of research design, collection and data reporting, interpretation of findings, inferential procedures and current public health research.

MPH 609 Cultural Context of Healthcare in the U.S. (4 credit hours)
This course examines the cultural, sociological and economic contexts in which the American health care system has developed.

MPH 611 Biology of Public Health (4 credit hours)
Students will study how diseases occur in order to plan effective interventions. Topics include how infectious diseases are transmitted; risk factors and biological processes for common diseases; and the impact of these diseases, disorders, conditions and control strategies on the health of the public.

MPH 607 Community Health Analysis (4 credit hours)
This course focuses on methods of analyzing health needs in communities in order to develop solutions using field work and research skills.

MPH 662 Management for Health Professionals (4 credit hours)
This course is an overview of the organizational structures, management styles and challenges in health care organizations. Students will examine key business functions as they apply to effective management of health care organizations, including hospitals and other care and provider facilities.

MPH 690 Internship in Public Health (6 credit hours)
The internship allows students the opportunity to demonstrate skills and competencies learned in the MPH program in a practical, supervised experience in a health-related agency. The internship is the capstone course, taken upon completion (or close to completion) of all other academic requirements. The purpose of the internship is to provide experiential learning and the opportunity to explore professional goals.
